NCAA Football: Five Underrated Teams

1. Oregon– I’m not saying the oddsmakers don’t like Oregon, but at this point I don’t think they like them enough. I think too much stock is being put into the opening game loss to LSU. Oregon didn’t put up huge numbers against LSU, but who will this year? This Oregon offense is absolutely stacked, and I think they’ll blow out a ton of teams this year.

2. Southern Mississippi- The Golden Eagles failed to cover the spread in their first two games, but they have easily covered in each of their last three contests. This is a unique Conference USA team that actually plays some pretty good defense. Expect to get some chances to find some value on this team in the coming weeks.

3. Tennessee- Tyler Bray is probably the best quarterback in the SEC, and this Volunteeers team is quite a bit better than they were last season. The defense still has a lot of room for improvement, but I think Tennessee will make some noise this year. The great home field advantage in Knoxville is something that should give this team some solid covers as the season moves along.

4. San Jose State- This is a program that was completely down in the dumps the last couple years, but they are clearly making some real progress. The Spartans beat Colorado State on the road, and they played UCLA and Nevada to close losses. It might not be pretty, but there should be plenty of value on this team in the weeks ahead.

5. Northwestern- Dan Persa is on the mend, and that makes a world of difference for this Northwestern team. The Wildcats are a legitimate contender in the Big Ten when Persa is in the game. If he stays healthy, I fully expect this team to pull off some upsets in the final half of the season.
